The Australian Women’s Volleyroos Team for the AVC Cup for Women and Vietnam Tour has been confirmed.

The 14-strong team are heading to Vietnam for a nine-day tour this week (date), before they arrive in the Philippines for the 2022 AVC Cup, starting on 21 August.

Women’s Volleyroos head coach Russell Borgeaud said the tour will provide ideal competition preparation to train and play against professional teams in Vietnam while acclimating to the hot and humid conditions, which will be similar to that in Manila.

“It is an opportunity to continue to develop our skills and teamwork before the AVC Cup in the Philippines,” Borgeaud said.

“Developing our team attack to a level that is competitive with the best teams in Asia is certainly a major focus for the tour.

“We don’t get to train or play together often as a team, especially compared to other teams in Asia, so this is a very important opportunity for us to work together. Specific teamwork and understanding, in attack and defence, is vital to how the Volleyroos move forward towards our longer-term goals,” he said.

Setter Kelly Lean will captain the team on tour and at the AVC Cup. The Volleyroos veteran said that following the team’s recent camps at the AIS and their last tour in Thailand, the experience will be an opportunity for the new-look team to further gel together.

“Not only Vietnam but all of our camps and the previous tour to Thailand have been incredibly important to not only bring the team together, reset the values and obviously refine skills before playing, but most importantly to develop team confidence in the way we play,” Lean said.

“We wouldn’t be able to expect success just by rocking up, we need time for a young and new group to build confidence, find rhythm and grow momentum leading into the AVC Cup.

“There are a few new debutants again on this tour so I’m excited to welcome them in and find their spots and roles and keep building the depth that we are looking for, for the longevity of the team.”

Following their recent training camp at the AIS, Lean said the team are looking great heading on tour this week.

“Nothing excites me more to see the team loving what they are doing and going all in on making us better, as well as giving themselves some really exciting life opportunities,” she said.

“The team has taken full advantage of this, and that’s made it really easy for me to feel that we are ready and going to produce volleyball we are proud of.”

The Australia Women’s Volleyroos will be on tour in Vietnam from 12 – 20 August, then head to Manila, Philippines for the AVC Cup for Women, running from 21–29 August.
