JAPAN CROWNED AVC CUP CHAMPIONS

Pasig City, Philippines, August 29, 2022 – Japan jumped to the top of the podium as champions of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women with a 3-1 defeat (25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16) of five-time champions China.

The 7th edition trophy is Japan’s first-ever title in the competition. They have gained the silver medal in 2018 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand as their best recorded finish prior to receiving the AVC Cup on Monday evening.

Thailand joined the podium with bronze medal honors after winning 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-18) against Vietnam.

For the classification, Chinese Taipei captured fifth place with 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-21) over hosts Philippines; while Iran finished in 7th place with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) against Australia.

The AVC Cup likewise honored individual awardees as part of the Dream Team, with Japan captain and setter Mika Shibata taking the spotlight as the Most Valuable Player.
