Tehran, Iran, May 20, 2022 – Al-Rayyan Sports Club pulled off a fantastic comeback 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Nakhon Ratchasima to end their campaign with well-earned 5th position at the 2022 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at Azadi Hall here on Friday.
Nakhon Ratchasima started the opening set with amazing power to take the first set 25-23. Al-Rayyan showed improvement in the second set and remained in superb form and counter-attacked well to blunt the formidable rivals’ efforts and snatch the second set 25-16.
Holding 1-1, the Qatari side maintained their confidence and quality with promising Mikhail Finger, Brazilian Marcus Vinicius and Ahmed Gamal helping their team close out the third set 25-20.
In the fourth set, Al-Rayyan continued their irresistible form to lead 16-11 in the second technical time-out, while the Thais were error-strewn trying to claw their way back but Al-Rayyan stormed on to win the set by wide margin 25-18 for the fifth place in this topnotch competition.
Al-Rayyan produced an average run in the 2022 edition following a 3-3 win/loss record including wins over Erbil, South Gas and Nakhon Ratchasima. They suffered three losses against the powerful Taraz VC, Suntory Sunbirds, and Shahdab Yazd. Nakhon Ratchasima left the venue in 6th place with 2 wins and four losses.
Nakhon Ratchasima’s captain Wanchai Tabwises expressed his satisfaction with the final 6th position and said: “We thought we would finish 8th but it is good that we finished 6th. I am satisfied with our position.”
“It is so good that we finished the tournament without injury. I am happy that we also finished with victory to keep our team spirit alive. This is my first time playing in Iran and I have felt so good here,” said Al-Rayyan’s André Luiz Q Franca.
