Bangkok, Thailand, January 30, 2021 – AVC and Asian volleyball family has learned with great sadness of the passing of Mr Buncha Phuttrabuncha at the age of 70.
Buncha, former Executive Board member of Thailand Volleyball Association and former chairman of the TVA Referee’s Committee, died on Friday, January 29 in Khon Kaen province, Thailand, three years after he was rushed into brain surgery following a hemorrhagic stroke he was suffering.
Widely known among coworkers and friends as “Hia Ma,” Buncha dedicated much of his life to promoting our beloved sport of volleyball in Thailand and Nakhon Ratchasima province in particular.
He was an influential TVA Executive Board member who played a key role in leading world-class volleyball competitions to be held in Nakhon Ratchasima including the FIVB Girls U18 World Championship in 2009 and 2013, the FIVB World Grand Prix as well as top-flight Asian tournaments including the Asian Senior Women’s Championship in 2001, 2007 and 2013, Asian Women’s U19 Championship, the Asian Women’s Club Championship and AVC Cup.
In addition, Buncha was a central figure within the TVA as he had become the beach volleyball coordinator for several years including the 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour Phuket Thailand Open powered by PTT.
As former chairman of the TVA Referee’s Committee, Buncha had improved the quality of Thai refereeing to meet international standards aside from throwing his full support for potential local referees to officiate at international level.
AVC and the entire Asian volleyball family will remember Mr Buncha’s love of volleyball, his tireless dedication and enthusiasm he had shown for his work for Asia’s sustainable development of volleyball in his home country of Thailand.
