CALICUT HEROES STUN IRAN CLUB TO SET UP CAVA MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN WITH HOSTS HELP NEPAL SPORTS CLUB

Kathmandu, Nepal, December 13, 2024 – Calicut Heroes of India bounced back from the Wednesday’s straight-set defeat to Iran Club to pull off stunning comeback win against the old foes to set up final clash against Help Nepal Sports Club in the 2024 CAVA Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at the Tripureswor Hall on Saturday.

After managing a 3-1 shutout of Iran Club in the Friday’s semifinals, Calicut Heroes will next go up against HNC, the team they had lost 2-3 in their very first match of the championship, in the Saturday’s showdown. The host side demolished Club HDC from Maldives 3-0 in the other semifinal clash on Friday.

The highly-anticipated semifinals began with excitement and drama in Kathmandu. Passionate fans witnessed two thrilling matches that set the stage for a grand finale on Saturday.

In the first semifinal encounter, Calicut Heroes from India played well defensively and offensively to pull off an impressive upset against the tournament’s unbeaten, top-ranked Iran Club.

The Heroes shrugged off the first-set rust to come back much strong in the next three sets for an eventual 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 26-24) victory.

Opposite Angamuthu was the star of the match, scoring a game-high 23 points from 19 attacks and 4 blocks for Calicut Heroes.

Outside hitter Mohammad Amin Rahimi and fellow opposite Amir Naderi Noureyni contributed 16 points apiece for Iran Club, but their efforts were not enough to help their team secure a spot in the final match.

The second semifinal clash saw Help Nepal Sports Club delight home crowd with a dominant straight-set 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 victory over Club HDC from the Maldives. HNC showcased their class and determination throughout the match, allowing the visitors no comeback opportunities.

Outside hitter Mazhar Ali from Pakistan led the charge with 18 points through 14 attacks, one block and 3 aces for HNC, while opposite Rabin Chand and outside hitter Mubashar Raza from Pakistan added 16 and 12 points respectively for the team’s sensational win.

Outside hitter Chirag from India stood out with 14 points from 12 attacks and 2 blocks on the Club HDC’s loss.

Saturday promises an exhilarating day as the tournament concludes with two exciting matches. The Bronze Medal Match will see Iran Club face off against Club HDC at 13:00pm local time, followed by the Gold Medal Match between Calicut Heroes and HNC at 15:30pm. 

After the final match, the awards presentation and closing ceremony will take place, with the Dream Team of the championship announced and the eventual winners crowned CAVA Men’s Club champions for the first time in history. Spectators are eagerly anticipating a grand celebration to conclude this prestigious event.
