CAPTAIN PENG YU-ROU POWERS CHINESE TAIPEI TO 3-0 WIN ON INDIA

Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 4, 2022 – The eight-player strong team of Chinese Taipei triumphed 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-15) against India in Pool B of the Preliminary Round of the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship in Monday’s second match held at the NU Sports Centre.

Chinese Taipei found good leadership in captain Peng Yu-Rou, as she led all scorers on the board with 18 points (14 attacks, 3 blocks, 1 service winner).

Peng gamely delivered with the points in clutch plays, especially when the opponents knew how to play along in rallies. She proved that could make the right decisions in the right moments of the match, but she credits everything to the rest of her Chinese Taipei squad on the floor.

“We know we wanted to bring more players here but this is our situation now. As captain, I want to do my very best to inspire everyone in the team. If we work together, we can bring our level of volleyball higher and higher each time,” Peng said.

Leadership likewise came in the steady hands of setter Su Tzu-Chien, bringing the team together to a good level of composure and rightful pacing, even for a downsized squad. She enabled her hitters to perform well, setting up opposite Hung Shih-Han for a good measure of 13 attack points.

In latter plays, India’s frontline started to guard the flanks well, giving tight, narrow spaces for their opponents to work on. They also played extra effort on floor defence but could not sustain a consistent level in their system.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Li-Jun sparked some rallies with spitfire moves from the left side, staying patient at recycling plays even after well-lined blocks from the opponents. The team barely showed any signs of a short roster as they tried to be crafty in their plays, even utilizing the pipe at times.

“We are a team, no matter how many players there are in this competition, we have to play as one group,” added Peng.

Chinese Taipei will face title-holders Japan on Tuesday, July 5, at 10:00 AM local time. India will play China in the succeeding match at 12:30 PM local time.
