Siem Reap, Cambodia, March 24, 2019 – Austrian duo Christophe Dressler and Alexander Huber captured the gold medal in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Siem Reap 2-star with a tie-break win on Sunday.
The Siem Reap 2-star concluded with an exciting finale as Dressler and Huber recovered from their setback in the first set, where Russian pair Maxim Sivolap and Artem Yarzutkin dominated them at 21-16. The Austrians made a huge comeback with an easy 21-13 win in the second set, then sent the crowd into raptures as they scored the final two points to snatch the win in the exciting final set 15-13.
The gold medal win at Siem Reap is an upgrade to their last medal placement of silver at the World Tour event in Agadir, Morocco on July 29, 2018. Dressler and Huber faced another Russian tandem – Ruslan Bykanov and Maksim Hudyakov.
Austria has won four gold, nine silver and four bronze medals at the World Tour, while Russia have claimed a total of 16 gold, 15 silver and 16 bronze medals.
Switzerland’s Quentin Metral and Yves Haussener won the bronze medal after they rallied from a set down to beat Austria’s Florian Schnetzer and Peter Eglseer 2-1 (18-21, 21-10, 15-12).
The Swiss pair added the bronze medal to the country’s World Tour medal haul of nine gold, 24 silver and 23 bronze medals. The last men’s medal placement for Switzerland was last August 12, 2018 in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, where Yves Haussener and then partner Florian Beer finished second.
The Siem Reap 2-star is the second men’s FIVB World Tour event in Cambodia and fourth overall in the Asian country.
