Bangkok, Thailand, February 21, 2023 – The first West Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship will be held in Jordan’s capital city Amman between March 7 and 18, with 10 club teams from 8 countries testing their mettle.
The participating teams comprise Kuwait SC (Kuwait), Police SC (Qatar), Mina Aden (Yemen), Oman SC (Oman) and Wahedat Club (Jordan) in Pool A, while Pool B consists of Dar Kulaib (Bahrain), Al-Rayyan (Qatar), South Gas SC (Iraq), which finished 7th at the previous Asian Men’s Club Championship in Iran last year, Shabab Elias Club Palestinian (Palestine) and Shabab Al-Hussein (Jordan).
All teams will play pool round-robin first round and at the conclusion of the preliminaries, top four teams from each pool will make the cut for the knockout quarterfinals.
The press conference of the inaugural championship was held in Doha, where the WAVA Headquarters is situated, on February 17, with Mr Jehad Qotishat, Vice President of the Jordan Volleyball Federation and West Asia Volleyball Association, presiding.
After that, the drawing of lots took place on video conference, with Mr Yousef Kano, Head of the Arbitration Committee of the tournament, conducting the ceremony.
Regarding Bahrain’s Dar Kulaib, which captured the title at the Isa bin Rashid Volleyball League 2018-19, they have a number of top Bahraini players on their roster, including Mohammed Yaqoob, Ali Habib, Mahmoud Abdulwahed, Ayman Isa, Hasan Alaiwi and libero Hussain Sultan.
Qatar’s giants Al-Rayyan are also strong as they landed the Qatar Senior Men’s Volleyball League at the 2021-2022 season and still remain atop the league standings in the current season. Their best performance in the Asian Men’s Club Championship dated back to 2019 when they returned from Chinese Taipei with bronze medal. At the previous edition last year in Iran, Al-Rayyan finished 5th.
Another club team from Qatar, Police SC, are one of the formidable teams to be reckoned with in the championship. They had won the Qatar Volleyball League for four times in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021 and picked up silver at the 2015 Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Club Championship.
AFC Beach Volleyball Championship in Doha
Meanwhile, the AFC Beach Volleyball Championship will get under way in Doha, Qatar from February 21 to 25, 2023, with six teams vying for top honour.
Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine and hosts Qatar will strut their stuff in the five-day event, which is held by West Asia Volleyball Association and serves as the AVC Continental Cub Zonal Phase Western Zone.
