Lausanne, Switzerland, September 4, 2020 – The FIVB Athletes’ Commission, chaired by Brazilian volleyball legend Gilberto ‘Giba’ Amauri de Godoy Filho, held its regular online meeting this week to discuss the latest developments in volleyball and beach volleyball, ensuring that athletes’ interests are reflected in the FIVB’s decision making.
The FIVB Athletes’ Commission has held regular online meetings every three or four weeks since the beginning of the year. In addition, several commission members have also been attending several meetings per week as part of the Athletes’ Relief Support Task Force. Those in attendance today included Athletes’ Commission President Giba, Secretary Vladimir Grbic and members Madelein Meppelink, Samuele Papi and Jordan Larson.
Opening the meeting, Gilberto ‘Giba’ Amauri de Godoy Filho, three-time Olympic medallist and three-time world champion, said:
“The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly had a significant impact on people all over the globe, including volleyball and beach volleyball players. So, it is vital that we can continue to meet, albeit virtually, to ensure we continue to serve as an essential link between the players and the FIVB during these challenging times.”
Following this, the relevant FIVB departments provided the Athletes’ Commission with updates on several events such as the 2021 VNL schedule and the upcoming King of the Court event in Utrecht, Netherlands which will be held in just over a week. The commission also discussed the extensive return to volleyball and beach volleyball guidelines.
In addition, the commission were given a progress update on the FIVB Athletes’ Relief Support fund which was jointly created by FIVB President Ary S. Graça F° and the FIVB Athletes’ Commission. The members also talked about the importance of the FIVB Projects’ Platform which provides annual support to National Federations. Subsequently, the status of the Athletes’ Commission elections and the players page on the FIVB website were discussed.
“As the link between players and the FIVB, the Athletes’ Commission has been involved in the Athletes’ Relief Support fund process every step of the way. We truly hope that this support will help those most in need during these difficult times,” said Vladimir Grbic, two-time Olympic medallist and a world champion.
The next online meeting of the Athletes’ Commission will be held in October.
