Lausanne, Switzerland, October 15, 2019 – Four teams will contest the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship this year, with three-time world champions and reigning South American champions Sada Cruzeiro Vôlei hosting the event in Betim, Brazil from December 3 to 8.
The 15th edition of the ultimate international club competition will also feature reigning European champions Cucine Lube Civitanova of Italy, 2014 World Championship silver medallists Al-Rayyan of Qatar representing Asia, and 2017 world champions Zenit Kazan of Russia. Europe is represented by two clubs after providing the winners and runners-up at the two last editions of the Men’s Club World Championship.
Between them, the four participants hold four world titles, six silver medals and three bronze medals in the history of the competition – plus dozens more at continental and national level.
It is the fourth time that Betim in the state of Minas Gerais hosts the competition. On the three previous occasions Sada Cruzeiro won the title against Russian opposition in the final, beating Russia’s Lokomotiv Novosibirsk in 2013 and Zenit Kazan back-to-back in 2015 and 2016.
In last year’s all-Italian final Trentino Volley outplayed Lube 3-1 at Czestochowa in Poland.
This year’s edition consists of a single round-robin pool followed by semifinals between the 1st- and 4th-ranked teams and the 2nd- and 3rd-ranked teams after pool play. The winners of the semifinals will advance to the final, with the losers to decide the bronze medal.
