Islamabad, Pakistan, May 11, 2024 – The 2nd Engro CAVA Volleyball Nations League kicked off on Saturday with an electrifying opening, featuring two exhilarating matches that set the stage for an action-packed tournament ahead.

In the first match of the day, Iran faced off against Turkmenistan in a fiercely contested battle that went down to the wire. After an intense five-set showdown, Iran emerged victorious with a narrow 3-2 victory, showcasing their resilience and determination on the court.


The match ended 23-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 19-17, highlighting the closely contested nature of the encounter. With this win, Iran set a strong foundation for their campaign in the tournament, securing a crucial victory in their opening match.

The excitement continued in the second match of the day, where Sir Lanka and Kyrgyzstan clashed in a thrilling showdown. In another closely contested battle, Kyrgyzstan emerged triumphant with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sir Lanka.

The match was stretched to five sets which ended 25-27, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20, 15-10), underscoring the intensity and competitive spirit displayed by both teams throughout the match. Kyrgyzstan’s victory set the stage for an exciting journey ahead in the tournament, as they aim to build on their strong start and make their mark on the competition.

Following the gripping matches, the opening ceremony of the Engro CAVA Nations League commenced, bringing together players, officials, and spectators to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship and international camaraderie. 

The ceremony commenced with a spectacular march of all participating teams into the arena, symbolizing unity and camaraderie among nations. As the atmosphere brimmed with anticipation, the national anthem of Pakistan echoed through the hall, stirring a sense of patriotism and pride among the attendees.

The ceremony featured captivating performances and speeches, setting the stage for an unforgettable tournament experience.

Ch Muhammad Yaqoob, Chairman of the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF), delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude to Engro, CAVA and all participating countries for their invaluable contributions to the tournament. He extended special thanks to the Government of Pakistan for their unwavering support towards the development of sports in the country.

Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, Government of Pakistan, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered an inspiring address. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting sports and pledged full support to the Pakistan Volleyball Federation in its endeavors to elevate the stature of volleyball in the country.

In a symbolic gesture of appreciation, Chairman PVF presented a shield to the esteemed guest of honor, symbolizing the spirit of collaboration and partnership that defines the tournament.

The ceremony reached its crescendo with a mesmerizing cultural dance performance, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Pakistan and setting the stage for an unforgettable tournament experience.

Following the opening ceremony, the eagerly awaited match between Pakistan and Afghanistan unfolded on the court, captivating spectators with its thrilling display of athleticism and skill.

Pakistan emerged victorious with a commanding 3-0 win over Afghanistan, 25-19, 25-21, 25-16 setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.

On Sunday, the excitement continued with the second day of the 2nd Engro CAVA Nations League. The first match saw Turkmenistan go head-to-head against Kyrgyzstan, with Turkmenistan securing a convincing 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21) victory.
The subsequent match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka witnessed Pakistan’s dominance, securing a resounding 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) win. The action-packed day concluded with the eagerly anticipated match between Iran and Afghanistan which saw the former power past the latter in exciting three-setter 25-17, 25-23, 25-19.
