Bangkok, Thailand, September 6, 2020 – GS Caltex Seoul Kixx stunned Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders to win the KOVO Cup at the Jecheon Olympic Sports Center in North Chungcheong Province, Korea Saturday, Jhoo Dong-chan wrote in a news coverage on koreatimes.co.kr.

“We all love a good underdog story, and that is one of the reasons the 2020 Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) Cup final was so exciting.”

Most experts said Heungkuk Life would likely win the entire tournament without conceding a single set, but GS Caltex Seoul shut out the top dog, winning 3-0 on the day.

GS Caltex Seoul’s formidable defense and excellent athleticism were the key factors behind the team’s dominance against the favorite throughout the match. The team’s young South Korean international Kang So-hui boasted her talent in serving to crack the opposition side’s defense line. Kang was named the tournament’s MVP after the game.

Center Mereta Lutz also blocked Kim Yeong-Koung and Lee Jae-young’s attacks at crucial moments. Lutz scored 25 points, making her the highest scorer of the game.

Heungkuk Life head coach Park Mi-hee said GS Caltex outplayed her team in all aspects.

“The GS Caltex players led both in offense and defense from the beginning,” said Park. “There is too much we need to work on. The season is going to start in a month. We will do our best to improve ourselves in the meantime.”

GS Caltex head coach Cha Sang-hyun said Heungkuk Life is still the league’s top dog despite his team’s victory on the day.

“I am pretty sure Heungkuk will do much better as the season starts,” he said. “Heungkuk’s Lucia Fresco has yet to be back in shape. Kim has also just joined the team. This team will definitely become an entirely different team in a month.”
