HONG KONG, CHINA CAPTURE FIRST WIN IN AVC CHALLENGE CUP WITH 3-0 MATCH ON INDONESIA 

Manila, Philippines, May 23, 2024 – Hong Kong, China collected their first victory in Pool B of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women after a 3-0 match (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) against Indonesia in the Philippine capital city’s Rizal Memorial Coliseum. 

Shum Lam bested all scorers on the field with 18 points in Thursday morning’s match, as she played for her first season with the Hong Kong, China national team.

“I am still a little nervous but I am very happy to win this game today. I want to thank my coach and teammates for the support they give me, and also the Federation for the trust they have given,” she said. 

Hong Kong, China composed their offense well, with setter Fung Tsz Yan loading the wings. Chim Wing Lam and Shum Lam established the rhythm of their offense, playing at a much faster pace than their opponents. The backcourt also sparked the performance, enabling the team play well in transition. 

Indonesia, the runners-up from the 2023 edition, showed that their young team could play well. 

They posted good passing skills and converted with some good runs from captain Bela Sabrina Agustina. 

Hong Kong, China mostly led in the opening set but Indonesia fired several service winners to trim down the lead. Precision from the service line eventually grew thin for the SAVA side and Hong Kong, China took the first set, 25-22. 

Indonesia needed to find a way to establish their temp and deliver consistently. Initially, they played well in counter-attack, but later suffered from errors. Coach Pedro Lilipay turned to his substitutes, who helped force scoring run to reach 23-23. 

Hong Kong, China rushed to get back in to the set, earning from a service error, and a swipe at the middle. 

Indonesia were able to play tight in the third set, managing to trail just a few points behind. 

Momentum swung toward the favor of Hong Kong, China as Chim Wing Lam looked eager to close out the victory. She worked hard in the passing unit and continued to convert from the wing, to help the team take 25-19 in the final set. 

Hong Kong, China will face Singapore on Saturday in the opening match at 10:00 local. 

Indonesia will play against Singapore in their next match on Friday at 16:00 local.
