INDIA, AUSTRALIA, KAZAKHSTAN AND VIETNAM GAIN VICTORIES ON DAY 1 OF AVC CHALLENGE CUP FOR WOMEN

Manila, Philippines, May 22, 2024 – India, Australia, Kazakhstan and Vietnam concluded the opening day of 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women with victories in their respective pools at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. 

POOL A

The fourth placers from the 2023 edition, India ignited in a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) against Iran. 

The match was foreseen as a balanced battle between teams of nearly equal skill. India outlasted their opponents with their edge in service and their steady play in transition.

Anagha Radhakrishnan bested all scorers on the board, with 16 points from 13 attacks and 3 blocks. Anusree Kambrath Poyilil (15 points) and Shaalini Saravanan (12 points) contributed further with double-digit markers. 

Meanwhile, Australia powered a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-18) against Chinese Taipei with the help of Caitlin Tipping’s match-high of 21 points. 

Cassandra Dodd added another 18 points to the tally, including 10 monster blocks in Wednesday’s main event. 

POOL B

Kazakhstan defeated Singapore in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-17), as they marked their debut in the competition. 

Kristina Belova (15 points) and captain Sana Anarkulova (12 points) led the charge for the CAVA side, which showed dominance all throughout the match. 

Later, defending champions Vietnam swept Hong Kong, China, 3-0 (25-13, 25- 17, 25-16) with their advantage in all scoring fields. 

Vi Thi Nhu Quyn (14 points) and Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen (11 points) led the charge for the SAVA side, to underline their intent to retain the crown. 

The Preliminary Round continues until Sunday, to set the semi-finals pairings as matches resume on Tuesday. The Finals are scheduled on Wednesday, May 29 in the Philippines’ capital city. 

The winning team will qualify and compete in the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup, scheduled from July 4-7, 2024 as likewise hosted by the Philippines. The eventual winners will then join the Volleyball Nations League as its format expands to 18 teams starting 2025.
