Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, June 6, 2022 – Iran overcame a strong challenge from Australia to pull off an exceptional straight-set 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 win in the opening Pool A match of the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship at Nakhon Pathom Gym on Monday.
Paria Hajatmand top-scored with 12 points including 8 attacks, while Cameron Zajer bagged 5 points for the losing side.
Iran started fast as they overwhelmed Australia 25-19 with crashing spikes of Paria Hajatmand and Setayesh Hosseini.
Australia poured everything they had in the second set, hoping for a comeback, but things still turned sour as they went down 18-25.
Going down two straight sets, the Aussies tried hard to get their rhythm back on track but still found Iran an impossible nut to crack to suffer another loss in the third set 16-25 and match.
“It was a nice match and we did well. We implemented whatever we were told. All we knew from the Australians was that they are tall and irresistible. I am happy for this opening victory,” Iranian Setayesh Hadi commented on her team’s performance after the match.
“Iran played very well. This was our first experience in an official match and we will do our best to get better in the upcoming matches,” Kayla Stevens, the outside hitter of Australia, said.
On Tuesday, Iran will have a rest day while Australia will go up against hosts Thailand.
