Canada wrapped up their Week 4 obligations at the 2021 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy with back-to-back wins after beating Asian powerhouses Japan to follow up on their victory a day earlier over Germany.
Japan, fielding a strong lineup led by sensation Yuki Ishikawa, Ran Takahashi and left-hander attacker Kunihiro Shimizu, fought hard in their tough match against Canada on Thursday, but still found the rivals too strong to go down in straight sets 22-25, 23-25, 18-25 to suffer six losses in the top-flight competition.
Joseph Sclater Ryan topscored with 16 points for Canada and captain John Gordon Perrin added 14, while Yuki Ishikawa delivered 12 points, Kunihiro Shimizu 11 and Run Takahashi 6 on Japan’s losing efforts.
Japan’s Yuki Ishikawa said at the virtual Mixed Zone: “Our sideout, which was a thing we were supposed to perform well, was not working today. In addition, Canada served really well and very efficiently, so we had to score our points on transition – but we didn’t manage to do so and this is one of the reasons why we lost this game.”
John Gordon Perrin of Canada said: “I’m happy about the way my team fought today. We have pointed out the way we want to play so far in the VNL, we have a lot to work on, but I feel it’s a step forward in this match. Week 4 was pretty tough, we haven’t our best volleyball so far, but in the games against Germany and Japan we played better in smaller skills in the game and we were able to win.”
