Battambang, Cambodia, April 5, 2019 – Two Japanese duos won their first two matches in the main draw opener on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Battambang 1-star.
Top seeds Sakurako Fujii and Minori Kumada’s main draw start went off without a hitch as they recorded double straight-set wins, while their compatriots Satono Ishitsubo and Asami Shiba survived tough finishes in two three-setters.
Sakurako and Kumada started with a clinical 2-0 (21-3, 21-4) win over Cambodia’s Leap Sara and Oeur Kunthea then completed their day’s mission in Pool A as they triumphed against Germany’s Anika Krebs and Leonie Welsch 2-0 (21-14, 21-9).
In Pool B, Ishitsubo and Shiba edged Israel’s Sofia Starikov and Anika Dave 2-1 (21-18, 16-21, 15-6) before prevailing against the second-seeded Colombian sister duo Claudia and Andrea Galindo in the day’s toughest match 2-1 (22-20, 17-21, 20-18).
Greece’s Konstantina Tsopoulou and Dimitra Manavi and the United States’ Lara Dysktra and Cassie House also cruised to the quarterfinals as they dominated with two wins in Pool C and Pool D, respectively.
The Greeks won both their matches in straight sets against Singapore’s Eliza Chong and Serene Ng and Russia’s Aleksandra Ganenko and Anastasiia Frolova, while the Americans had a straight-set win against Cambodia’s Samrith Jeudi and San Soma and a tough tie-break triumph against Latvia’s Varvara Brailko and Anete Namike.
