Bangkok, Thailand, September 24, 2020 – Jiangsu, powered by two Rio Games gold medallists Zhang Changning and Gong Xiangyu, stormed past Hebei 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-11) in the second round of the 2020 Chinese Women’s Volleyball Championship in Jiangmen, a news release on xinhuanet.com said on Thursday.
China’s national team player Gong Xiangyu notched up seven points to help Jiangsu take the first set.
Both sides accelerated their rhythm in the second set, but Hebei could hardly break through the tight blocks cemented by Xu Ruoya and Wang Chenyue as Jiangsu had an identical winning scoring for the second set.
The suspense of the match was killed early in the third set as Jiangsu started with a 5-0 run and continued their form by scoring seven points in a row in the middle of the set.
“For me and my national teammate Gong Xiangyu, this is our first time to compete in the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Championship. Of course we want to deliver our best performance here,” said Jiangsu captain Zhang Changning.
“But I don’t think we played confidently enough in today’s and yesterday’s matches. I think we can do better as the championship moves on,” Zhang added.
Later, Beijing celebrated their 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-21) victory against Yunnan.
Both sides exchanged spikes from the very beginning until they tied at 12-12. Xue Yizhi then made four points from a block and three kills to initiate a 9-1 scoring run for Beijing which kept it until the end of the set.
Yunnan made more errors in the second set, especially in serve and back court receiving, only to see Beijing take the set again.
After Beijing jumped to a 13-4 lead in the third set, Yunnan called a time-out, closing it to one point at 20-21, and called another time-out but failed to level it even.
Also on Thursday, Shanghai surprised Tianjin, strengthened by Li Yingying, with a straight-set win (27-25, 25-23, 25-22).
