Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 5, 2022 – An action-packed Tuesday at the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship concluded with Korea, Iran, Japan and China winning against their respective pool opponents at the NU Sports Centre.
Korea outlasted the tough challenge of the Thailand team, surviving the tie-break, 3-2 (25-19, 25-15, 24-26, 24-26, 15-12) in Pool A of the Preliminary Round.
Outside hitter Kim Sein provided Korea with consistent play, scoring off her nearly unstoppable wing attack and her serves. She steadied the Korean side when it came to crucial plays, posting effectively on both offence and defence. She tallied a total of 23 points in the match.
Thailand captain Donphon Sinpho provided her own share of heroics which helped spark the decider, as she scored a total of 27 points in Tuesday’s defeat.
Likewise in Pool A, Iran braved the cheering home crowd in NU Sports Centre, and defeated hosts Kazakhstan in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-21).
Roya Farrokhi delivered a stellar performance, charting a total of 20 points for Iran’s first taste of victory in the competition.
Japan took their first step toward title defence as they defeated Chinese Taipei, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-15) in Pool B.
Despite the straight-sets win, Japan coach Akinori Yamada found tough opposition in the Chinese Taipei side.
“They played really well in serve and attack, and we had to deal with this, especially in the second set. Fortunately, we made the right decisions to call upon our substitutes, and everything worked well,” said Yamada.
He referred to captain and setter Haruka Kaji and hitter Anna Uemura, who both changed the pace and approach of the team’s offence, in order to claim victory.
Later in Pool B, China captured their second victory in as many matches, taking 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-15) against India.
The twelve-time titlists showed much composure amidst variety in their offence, as setter Yin Xiaolan distributed the ball across the cout.
Zhuang Yushan (14 points), Wang Yifan (10 points), Li Xuemeng (10 points), and Zhang Hongziyan (10 points) provided double-digit scores for Tuesday’s win.
China head coach Kuang Qi will now look to perform well against Japan in one of the most awaited match-ups in the competition.
“Japan is a very strong team. Both their men’s and women’s teams are among the top in the world. We will prepare for this match and we will try our best to win. We also want to be able to learn from them, even if we compete against them,” said Kuang Qi.
The Preliminary round will continue until Saturday, July 9, with the semi-finals set for Sunday, July 10. The classification matches, medal matches and awarding ceremony are scheduled for Monday, July 11.
The top two teams to emerge from the competition will progress to the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship in 2023.
