VNL FINALS INTRODUCE GREEN CARDS FOR FAIR PLAY

Fair Play Moment prize of USD 30,000 to be awarded to the teams with the most green cards

A new system of rewarding fair play will be tested during the women’s and the men’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2023 Finals in July, to be held in Arlington, the United States and Gdansk, Poland, respectively. For the first time in international competition, green cards will be shown to players who admit to a block touch or a net touch and thus help save time from unnecessary video challenges.

The team with the highest number of green cards received during the VNL Finals will be awarded a Fair Play Moment prize of USD 30,000. To break a potential tie, the highest placed team in the final standings will receive the award.

A fair play award of USD 15,000 was already presented by FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° to the men’s team of Poland, as they admitted to touching the ball in blocking, or the net multiple times during last year’s VNL 2022 Finals in Bologna, Italy.

A system of awarding fair play with green cards has already been applied in domestic club competitions, like those of Italy and Bulgaria, for example. The first green card was shown on 6 October 2018 by Italian referee Andrea Puecher to Itas Trentino’s playmaker Simone Giannelli for admitting to a block touch in an Italian national super cup semifinal against Sir Safety Conad Perugia.

However, now the green card will be tested in international competition for the first time. If the test is successful, the goal is to implement the Fair Play Moment across all volleyball competitions in order to encourage more spontaneous fair play behaviour by the players in the future.

The women’s VNL Finals in Arlington will be held from 12 to 16 July, and the men’s VNL Finals in Gdansk will take place from 19 to 23 July. The Finals will see eight women’s and eight men’s teams competing in a direct elimination bracket of quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches.
