Bangkok, Thailand, February 1, 2023 – The first draft of 2023 AVC Beach Volleyball Competition Calendar has been launched recently which outlines the AVC’s beach volleyball events for the on-going Olympic cycle leading up to the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
The calendar has already been approved by the AVC Beach Volleyball Committee Meeting, chaired by its President Mr Craig Carracher on January 28, and will be also taken into further consideration of AVC Board of Administration.
The double-gender Continental Cup Phase 1 Western Zone in Qatar between February 21 and 25 marks the start of the 2023 AVC beach volleyball competition to open the qualification phase for the Paris 2024.
Later, Vietnam will host the “SABECO” AVC Women’s Beach Tour Ho Chi Minh City Open from April 8 to 11, while Songkhla, Thailand will be the third AVC beach volleyball event as the “Est Cola” AVC Beach Tour 22nd Samila Open, being held as traditional annual event, will take place on the white sand beach in the popular tourist town from April 14 to 17, followed by the double-gender AVC Beach Tour Mollymook Open in Australia during May 4 and 7.
The Continental Cup Phase 1 will also come to Southeast Asian Zone when the double-gender competition will make its debut in Cambodia between May 11 and 16.
During this period of time, Australia, China and Oman become the three candidate organisers for the continent’s topflight 2023 Asian Senior Beach Volleyball Championships. As Oman need to host the only men’s Asian Beach Volleyball Championship from September 5 to 9, Australia and China are willing to host the double-gender Championships, with the former likely to organise it between May 4 and 7 and the latter between June 22 and 25.
The three candidate organisers had been requested to update their necessary hosting information including general conditions, flights and other important matters in order that the relevant matters on the candidate organisers can be raised for AVC Board of Administration’s further consideration and decision during its next meeting.
Thailand will later host the double-gender 5th Asian U21 Beach Volleyball Championships between July 13 and 16, which serves as the continent’s qualification tournament for the FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships. The host province for the Asian event has yet been announced, but it has already confirmed that Roi Et, Thailand will stage the Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships from November 8 to 12, 2023.
In August, Asian beach volleyball teams stand a good opportunity to strut their stuff in the World Beach Games – Bali 2023 in Indonesia during August 6 and 12.
Following the improving recovery prospects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia, the AVC Beach Tour Penghu Open will return to Chinese Taipei this year when the double-gender event has been confirmed to take place from August 17 to 20. The previous 2022 edition had been cancelled due to grave concerns over the COVID-19 situation in the country.
Between August 25 and 27, the women’s Continental Cup Phase 1 Central Zone will be hosted by Kyrgyzstan, while China will organise the double-gender Continental Cup Phase 1 Eastern Zone in August, with competition dates yet to be confirmed.
The Continental Cup Phase 1 will also take place in the Oceania Zone as Vanuatu will play host to the double-gender event from September 1 to 5, while Bangladesh is due to stage the only men’s Continental Cup Phase 1 Central Zone between September 5 and 7.
After that, Ningbo Banbianshan Beach Volleyball Centre in China will take centre stage for the double-gender beach volleyball competition of the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 from September 19 to 28.
Meanwhile, qualified beach volleyball teams across the world including those from Asia will travel to Mexico to test their mettle against the world’s top teams in the double-gender FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships between October 6 and 12.
Furthermore, qualified teams in the younger level will also chase their dreams of becoming world champions in Thailand as the sport-loving nation will host the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships in Roi Et between November 8 and 12.
Before the end of year, the 2023 Pacific Games, which will be hosted by Honiara, Solomon Islands from November 19 to December 2, will also see many teams in Oceania vie for top honours.
However, if based on the locations of both FIVB and AVC beach volleyball events, aside from the afore-mentioned AVC beach tournaments, many Beach Pro Tour events will take place in Asia in 2023.
The double-gender 2022 Beach Pro Tour Finals, which kicked off on January 26, had already come to a successful conclusion in Doha on January 29. However, the Qatar’s capital city is now staging the season-opening Beach Pro Tour events in the Doha Elite 16 between February 1 and 5.
From March 16 to 19, New Zealand will play host to the Mt Maunganui Beach Futures, with Australia organising the double-gender Coolangatta Futures during March 29 and April 2 and Polynesia staging the men’s Tahiti Futures from April 4 to 8.
Thailand will also play host to the double-gender Satun Futures between April 20 and 23 in its southern province Satun, while Vietnam will host the women’s Tuan Chau-Halong Futures during June 8 and 11 and the double-gender Qidong Futures will be held in China from August 17 to 20.
Maldives and China will host the double-gender Challenge events, with the former hosting the Maldives Challenge from October 26 to 29 and the latter organising the Hainan Challenge between November 2 and 5.
In terms of the Elite 16 events, Dubai and Australia will host the double-gender events in November. As the Dubai Elite 16 will take place in the United Arab Emirates between November 8 and 12, the Australia Elite 16 will be organised from November 22 to 26.
Philippines will play host to the double-gender Philippines Challenge during November 30 and December 3, followed by the 2023 Beach Pro Tour Finals in Doha, Qatar from December 7 to 10.
In addition, Asian players and teams can join the fray in the other Beach Pro Tour events across the world.
Mexico will host the La Paz Challenge for both genders from March 16 to 19, followed by the Tepic Elite 16 in the same country between March 22 and 26, while three events will be organised in Brazil for both genders in April consisting of the Itapema Challenge from April 6 to 9, the Saquarema Challenge during April 13 and 16 and the Uberlandia Elite 16 between April 26 and 30.
From May 11 to 14, Spain will host the men’s Madrid Futures and will host similar event for women between May 18 and 21, while the double-gender Cervia Futures will take place in Italy from May 18 to 21 and the Ostrava Elite 16 for both genders will be held in Czech Republic between May 31 and June 4.
Three more events will take place in Europe, with Italy hosting the Lecce Futures from June 8 to 11, Latvia organising the Jurmala Challenge between June 15 and 18 and Greece staging the Ios Island Futures during June 22 and 25, all of them double-gender events.
In July, Europe will host 4 events, with Switzerland staging the Gstaad Elite 16 for both genders between July 5 and 9, Portugal organising the Espinho Challenge from July 13 to 16, Belgium holding the Leuven Futures in the same period July 13-16 and Poland hosting the Myslowice Futures between July 27 and 30.
Canada is due to host two events for both genders in July comprising the Edmonton Challenge from July 20 to 23 and the Montreal Elite 16 between July 26 to 30.
The Beach Pro Tour events for both genders will also take place in August comprising Poland (Warsaw (Monta Club) Futures), Austria (Baden Futures) and Germany (Hamburg Elite 16), while two events will be held in September consisting of the men’s Warsaw (Wilanow region) Futures in Poland and the Paris Elite 16 in France.
