THAILAND, CHINA, CHINESE TAIPEI TALLY OPENING DAY WINS IN ASIAN WOMEN’S U20 CHAMPIONSHIP IN KAZAKHSTAN

Daily Review (July 4)

Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 4, 2022 – Three straight-set matches marked the opening day of the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship, with Thailand, China, and Chinese Taipei besting their respective opponents on Monday at the NU Sports Centre.

In Pool A, Thailand won over a tall Iran team in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-15) in Monday’s main event, with captain and starting outside hitter Donphon Sinpho leading the charge. She scored a match-high 17 points, while gaining much needed help from Ampha Sonsurat (11 points) and Achirayaporn Kumjaiboon (9 points).

Iran’s Roya Farrokhi and Mahdieh Rahimizare scored 10 points each, but the team fell to a total of 23 unforced errors, which made a huge difference in the match.

Meanwhile in Pool B, twelve-time champions China took no time to take a three-set win (25-6, 25-9, 25-4) on Uzbekistan in the 2022 edition’s opening match. Captain Wang Yifang led her team with 11 attacks, and unleashed 3 service winners.

The Chinese side took 58 minutes to complete the straight-sets match, as they played well in nearly every department. They executed their attacks with precision, they passed and blocked well, and they also carried good numbers from the service line. They were far from playing perfect, flawless volleyball, but as they limited their error count to 9, they gathered good momentum for Monday’s victory.

In a later Pool B match, Chinese Taipei, with their mere eight-player squad, won 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-15) against India. It was once again the team captain’s show, with Peng Yu-Rou leading the field with 18 points (14 attacks, 3 blocks, 1 service ace). Opposite hitter Hung Shih-Han added another 14 points for the victory. The outstanding performances from the Chinese Taipei side showed good levels of consistency, stability, and endurance for a rather narrow roster.

The Preliminary round will continue on Tuesday, July 5, until the semi-finals showdown is set for Sunday, July 10. The eventual champions and vice-champions to be known on Monday, July 12, will qualify for direct berths going into the FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship in 2023.
