PARIS 2024 VOLLEYBALL DRAWING OF LOTS TO BE HELD AT THE VNL FINALS

The women will go first, on June 19, with the men knowing their Olympics pools one week later

The men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments of the Paris Olympics will take shape over the next two weeks as, right after the conclusion of the qualification period, the drawing of lots for both genders will take place, forming the pools for the Preliminary Phase of the event.

The drawing of lots of each gender will be held one day before the start of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 Finals. The 12 women’s national teams qualified for Paris 2024 will take part in the draw on June 19, in Bangkok, Thailand, at 18:00 local time (11:00 GMT), while the men will know their Olympic paths following the conclusion of the event set to be held in Łódź, Poland, on June 26, at 18:00 local time (16:00 GMT).

Both events will be streamed live on Volleyball World’s YouTube channel – click here to watch the women’s and here to follow the men’s.

The qualification period for the women will end on June 16, the last day of the VNL 2024 Preliminary Phase. Currently, France, as the host country, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Serbia, Türkiye and the United States, who prevailed at last year’s Volleyball Olympic Qualifiers, are the nations guaranteed a spot in the Games.

On the men’s side, the race to join host country France and the national teams that succeeded at the Volleyball Olympic Qualifiers – Brazil, Canada, Germany, Japan, Poland and the United States – continues until June 23, when the VNL 2024 Preliminary Phase will be completed.

Competition formula

After the drawing of lots, the 12 national teams in each gender will be split into three pools of four participants. Host country France will occupy the top spot in Pool A for both genders, while the first positions in Pools B and C are reserved for the qualified national teams best ranked in the FIVB Volleyball World Rankings as of June 17 for the women and June 24 for the men.

The draw will then have three stages, with teams ranked from fourth to sixth, from seventh to ninth and from tenth to 12th being allocated in their respective pools following the serpentine system.

In pool play, teams will face each of their three opponents once. Those ranked first and second in each pool will advance, as well as the two best third-placed teams. Teams will be seeded in the Final Phase bracket according to the Teams Combined Ranking System and starting at the quarterfinals, the tournament continues in single elimination format.
