Doha, Qatar, October 12, 2019 – Brazil registered the first ever match victory in an FIVB-sanctioned beach volleyball 4×4 game as the discipline made its debut at the 2019 ANOC World Beach Games in the sweltering heat of Doha on Saturday morning.
To no surprise, the star-studded Brazilian squad took only 28 minutes to overcome the resistance of their first Pool A opponent, Nigeria. The South American powerhouse left no doubts over their superiority on the sand and cruised to a landslide 2-0 (21-7, 21-10) victory. The tallest person on the court, Fernanda Berti Alves, top-scored 11 points towards her team’s success, including the match winning point.
“It’s actually my first time playing 4×4,” Fernanda commented after the game. “I had a lot of fun, because the other girls from Brazil are normally my opponents, but now we play together. We tried to find ourselves on the court, because it’s too many people; we are not used to that, but that’s OK. We have a good energy and good communication and that makes everything easier.”
In the other Pool A game, United States mastered a 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) shutout of Czech Republic. Towards the end of the first set the Czechs fought back to almost wipe out the wide lead of the Americans and get back to within one point, but USA took the next two rallies to close the set. In the second, they continued to dominate with Geena Urango hammering the closing point with an ace.
Vanuatu opened their World Beach Games campaign with a straight-set victory over Canada in Pool B. The tiny Pacific island nation’s team stood up to the squad from the mighty North American powerhouse to deliver a sensational 2-0 (21-18, 21-19) upset. Canada’s Camille Saxton was the best scorer of the match on 12 points, while Sherysyn Toko tallied 11 for the winners.
“We were under a little bit of pressure and the weather is very hot, but we tried our best to win this match. We surprised ourselves, because we come from a small island in the Pacific, which people don’t know about, and we are very happy, because we know that Canada is very strong,” said Sherysyn Toko after the match.
Australia took the early lead in the Pool B standings with an emphatic 2-0 (21-11, 21-17) win over Gambia, which their hammered out in just 30 minutes of play.
