Bangkok, Thailand, December 14, 2021 – Aussies Joshua Howat/Solomon Bushby and Thailand’s Narakorn Chumaphai/Nopphawit Phuttharong suffered their losses in the men’s qualification of the 2021 FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships at Bang Tao Beach in Phuket, Thailand, but the former became the lucky losers to enter the main draw on Wednesday.
Four matches were held in the men’s qualification round on Tuesday. Australians Howat/Bushby performed well in their tough match against Aleksandr Martynenko/Aleksandr Rukhmanov, but found the Russians too strong to go down 18-21, 18-21, while Germans Momme Lorenz/Laurenz Welsch pulled off a comfortable 21-13, 21-12 win against Thais Narakorn/Nopphawit.
The other qualifying match between Brazilians Ferdinand Dohmann Johann/Coelho Fagundes Sampalo Lucas and USA’s Ayden Keeter/Carson Barnes saw the former fare better to capture a convincing 21-14, 21-19 win against the latter, while Czech Republic’s Jakub Sepka/Tomas Semerad received a bye to advance to the main draw.
The main draw features a total of 32 teams. However, 26 teams had earlier qualified for the main draw, while four winning teams came from the Tuesday’s qualification round comprising Russians Martynenko/Rukhmanov, Germans Lorenz/Welsch, Brazilians Johann/Lucas and Czech Republic’s Sepka/Semerad. Therefore, two lucky losers’ draw was held to fill the vacancies.
Australians Joshua Howat/Solomon Bushby and USA’s Ayden Keeter/Carson Barnes fortunately punched their tickets into the main draw, leaving only Thailand’s Narakorn/Nopphawit to miss the cut.
The 32-team main draw in both men’s and women’s events will take place on Wednesday, starting with the women’s event at 8am Bangkok time. Six courts including four competition courts will be used during the main draw matches.
The semifinals and the medal matches for both genders will be streamed live on the Beach Volleyball World video channel on YouTube.
Meanwhile, the General Technical Meeting and the drawing of lots ceremony took place at the Angsana Laguna Phuket on Tuesday evening, with Thailand Volleyball Association President Mr Somporn Chaibangyang presiding and delivering a welcome speech to all participating teams in the main draw.
Technical Delegate Mr Oguz Degirmenci from Turkey and Referee Delegate Ms Maria Amelia Villas Boas Da Fonseca from Brazil jointly explained about the rules of the game to be applied for use in the top-flight competition and match protocol before drawing lots to determine the men’s and women’s pool compositions and matchday schedule.
