KOREA CAPTURE STRAIGHT-SETS WIN OVER KAZAKHSTAN

Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 6, 2022 – Korea took their second win in Pool A of the Preliminary Round of the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship, with a 3-0 match (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) against hosts Kazakhstan.

“I am so happy for this victory, and so proud of our teamwork. It’s a great honor to be playing with this team,” Korea captain Park Suyeon said in an interview after Wednesday evening main event at NU Sports Centre.

Korea opposite Yang Youkyung led all scorers in the match, tallying 12 points, from 10 attacks, 1 block and 1 service ace. Middle Kim Sebeen also scored in double-digits, adding 10 points to the victory.

Kazakhstan middle blocker Yuliya Yakimova picked up 10 points (5 attacks and 5 blocks) in the loss.

Korea served well enough to score off several aces, but mostly afforded them to dictate the pace of the match. They were able to post good defence and counter-attack, and they showed a pretty good system in their frontline. Outside hitter Park Suyeon and opposite Yang Youkyung ran the wing attacks while Lee Jisoo delivered with solid plays in the middle.

Kazakhstan tried to establish their rhythm, but could not seem to manage well, given their opponents’ power service.

The hosts however, showed that they could be effective in blocking. Yakimova scored off several kill blocks to prove this.

The Kazakh players had the slight advantage in height, and they could capitalize on this, even in tapping off-speed hits. As they slowly improved and defined their own tempo, they utilized the backline attack of captain Ayaulym Muratova.

Korea later suffered from their own share of miscues, as the hosts mustered momentum to play along the same pace and scoring. However, Kazakhstan could not seem to sustain consistent quality, as they suffered their second defeat in the competition.

Korea will resume play on Saturday, July 9, against Iran at 12:30 local; while Kazakhstan will face Thailand on Thursday, July 7, in the main event at 17:30 local.
