Pasig City, Philippines, August 27, 2022 – Hosts Philippines powered through a tough Australian team to take the tie-break win 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 15-12) on Sunday afternoon at the PhilSports Arena. The home team will now have the right to play for fifth place at the 2022 AVC Cup for Women.
Diana Mae Carlos (26 points), Jessica Margarett Galanza (18 points) and Celine Domingo (15 points) powered the five-set win with double-digits, which delivered the definitive difference for the hosts.
Caitlin Tipping scored 25 points in Australia’s defeat.
Australia aced their way to set the tone of the match, as they unleashed powerful serves.
Their opponents had previously shown good floor coverage, but Australia strategized well from the service line.
The hosts tried to bounce back, by changing up the passing unit. They were able to run their plays better, enabling Carlos on attack. Domingo and Jeanette Panaga also activated the middle attack.
Later, Australia reverted to their service game, and they easily identified gaps in their opponents’ serve-receive. Furthermore, they grew their momentum by the net and synchronized their block formation better.
Philippines tried to rethink their offense, as they tried to outsmart opponents and forced the decider. The home team rode on the crest of their momentum, banking on the heroics of Galanza and Carlos for the tie-break win.
With a guaranteed sixth place finish, the Philippines has now registered their best record in the competition’s history. They completed previous outing in 2018 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand with a ninth place finish.
“There aren’t any enough words to equate how I feel for this team as we have the honor to represent the country. It’s not difficult to be the captain, the leader of this team, because there is a leader in each one in this team,” said Philippines captain and setter Julia Melissa Morado-De Guzman.
Philippines will play against Chinese Taipei for fifth place on Monday, August 29 at 13:00 local time, while Australia will face Iran for the 7th-8th classification in an earlier match at 10:00 local time.
