Bangkok, Thailand, October 11, 2020 – Al-Sadd and Al-Shamal suffered two straight losses in the preliminary round of the Amir Volleyball Cup Qualifiers at QVA Hall, putting their high hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals out of reach, Qatar Volleyball Association reported on volleyball.qa on Saturday.
Contesting the Group B encounters, Al-Sadd lost to Qatar SC in thrilling straight sets 20-25, 22-25, 25-27. It was a crucial win and the first three points for Qatar, while Al-Sadd were empty-handed as they already went down to Al Khor in four-setter 22-25 25-17 15-25 23-25 in their first match earlier on Thursday.
With only three teams playing in each group, Al-Sadd, losing twice, crashed out. Qatar and Al Khor will battle it out coming Tuesday, October 13 for the top spot in Group B. However, both sides are assured of booking their quarter-final berths.
Like Al-Sadd, Al-Shamal also faced the similar fate in Group A. Al-Shamal, beaten 0-3 by Al Gharafa in their first match earlier, lost their second match on Saturday after going down 15-25 11-25 10-25 to Al Wakrah. Losing two in a row ended Al-Shamal’s challenge in this tournament.
Al Wakrah and Al Gharafa, both having similar 3 points from their first wins against Al-Shamal, advanced to the quarter-finals, but will take on each other coming Tuesday to determine the Group A winners.
Qatar national head coach Mr. Kamilo Soto from Argentina was also keen to follow the matches in order to understand the level of players during the competitions.
