Tehran, Iran, May 19, 2022 – Qatar’s Al-Rayyan Sports Club faced a daunting task against South Gas Sport Club to pull off a dramatic four-set win in their 5th-8th playoff match at the 2022 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at Azadi Hall on Thursday.
The hard-fought 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20 win in this crucial match handed Al-Rayyan, a side packed with talents including Czechia star spiker Mikhail Finger and Brazilian Marcus Vinicius De Souza Costa, a chance to take on Nakhon Ratchasima.
Al-Rayyan and Nakhon Ratchasima will face off in the 5th-6th place on Friday, the last day of the one-week-long competition, while South Gas will challenge winless Erbil for the 7th position in this Championship.
Against South Gas on Thursday, Al-Rayyan Sports Club had three double-digit performances from Marcus Vinicius De Souza Costa, Mikhail Finger, and Ilija Ivoic who respectively tallied 20, 18, 15 points, while the Brazilian Evandro Dias De Souza scored 15 points on South Gas’s losing effort.
“I am very happy with the victory of our team and the good performance of the Iraqi team, which was not a team that could easily give up the game, and we came to the conclusion in the second and fourth sets that we have the ability to win this team as well”.
Concerning the hosting, he added, “The tournament is well organized and this is the first time I am taking part in Asian events and among the super-strong players who are here. In Qatar League, we have also many superstars like Ngapeth, Zaytsev and Iranian Saber Kazemi. This proves that not only in the Italian League but also in Iran and in Qatar, good players can come and play,” Sami Mahmoud Abukhiarah, Al-Rayyan’s libero, said.
