ASIA’S TOP TEAMS LOOK FORWARD TO PLAYING IN 7TH AVC CUP FOR WOMEN

August 20, 2022, Pasig City, Philippines – Coaches and captains of Australia, China, Iran, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and hosts Philippines met with the media on Saturday afternoon at the AVC Press Center to share their comments and insights ahead of the competition at 2022 AVC Cup for Women.

The press meet started with Philippine National Volleyball Federation President Ramon Suzara, as he welcomed the participants to the host city and wished everyone the best of luck in what he foresees to feature top-notch competition from Asia’s top women’s teams.

Dr Eom Han Joo, Control Committee President and Technical Delegate, also spoke to the nine participating teams.

“On behalf of the Asian Volleyball Confederation President Madame Rita Subowo and representing the entire Control Committee, I will do my best and I know and hope you will do your best in this championship,” he said. 

Five-time champions China are bringing their U20 team, with high hopes for all participants.

“I really hope everyone will give their very best in this competition,” said China captain Wang Yifan.

Thailand will look to add their second title in the competition’s history after winning in 2012.

“Every single game is so important for our team, and each time, we will try our best to show the spirit of Thailand,” said coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul.

Japan are likewise expected to draw crowds to flock the Philsports Arena. Team manager Takashi Nakamura was just delighted for the team to be back in competition.

“We are just so glad to attend this competition even at this difficult time,” he said in reference to the COVID-19 era.

Vietnam captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy likewise relished the opportunity to be able to participate. She said “We are happy to be here to stay in this beautiful country. We will try our best to play while also enjoying every moment while here.”

Iran coach Alessandra Kampedelli looks to capitalize on the opportunity to play against strong teams. “Every time we play, we will really fight. We will do our best.”

Australia are bringing in their younger generation of players.

Coach Russell Borgeaud: said “We are rebuilding our team with 11 debutants. We have a really young team. We really want the players to enjoy what they do and have quality experience so they could build on that in the future.”

Korea coach Kim Dong Cheon thanked AVC and the Local Organizing Committee for the warm hospitality and sent an important message to all.

“We should continue to have extra caution on our health and have a safe competition,” he said.

Chinese Taipei coach Koji Tsuzarabara simply wished “Good luck to everyone.”

Philippines player Michelle Gumabao promised everyone an unforgettable time.

“You will get to experience the support of Philippine volleyball community. We are one hundred percent sure you will enjoy every game because the Filipino fans are very passionate about volleyball,” she said.

Competition starts with pool play (Pool A – PHI, KOR, CHN, VIE, IRI and Pool B – JPN, THA, TPE, AUS) on Sunday, August 21, 2022. Teams head into a rest and recovery day on Friday, August 26, before progressing into the Quarterfinals on Saturday, August 27.

The Semi-finals follow on Sunday, August 28; with the medal matches and awarding ceremony on Monday, August 29 to determine the winners of the 7th edition of the competition.
