Pasig City, Philippines, August 28, 2022 – Defending and five-time champions China and previous runners-up Japan will contend the championship trophy of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women after defeating their respective semifinal match-ups on Sunday at the PhilSports Arena.
The returning champions China were first to book their finals ticket after their tie-break triumph against Thailand 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 25-14, 23-25, 15-10).
Wu Mengjie wove magic on Sunday evening, making 29 points as a consistently reliable scorer for the team. Zhuang Yushan and Zhou Yetong added 17 points each to power the Chinese campaign for the title.
Japan clinched the second slot for the finale in the 2022 AVC Cup for Women, as they took a 3-1 match (25-17, 25- 22, 34-36, 25-10) against Vietnam in Sunday evening’s main event at the PhilSports Arena.
Mizuki Tanaka helped carry Japan, scoring 21 points from 19 attacks, a block and a service winner. Tran Thi Thanh Thuy had a massive 29-point haul in the defeat.
Earlier, Chinese Taipei triumphed 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-17) against Iran and will move to the 5th-6th classification match, along with hosts Philippines, after defeating Australia in the decider, 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 15-12).
The medal matches are scheduled on Monday, August 29, at the PhilSports Arena.
