Pasig City, Philippines, August 21, 2022 – Five-time champions China led the roster of winners to open the 2022 AVC Cup for Women on Sunday at the PhilSports Arena. Japan and Vietnam likewise defeated their respective opponents at the start of the preliminary round.
China looked strong and in top form as they took a straight-set win, 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-9) against Korea in Pool A of the competition.
The Chinese side dominated on all fronts, scoring from 38 attacks, 10 blocks and 9 service winners. Outside hitter Zhuang Yushan took charge and contributed 13 points in the match.
China captain Wang Yifan played off the bench and saw how her team performed in the victory.
“I think my teammates overcame the nervousness of the first game and then played to our usual level or system in training,” she said.
Later in Pool B, Japan went for a 3-0 win (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) against Thailand, with outside hitter Yuki Nishikawa hauling in 20 points.
Teams played along exciting rallies, showing nearly similar capability in covering the floor and coming back in transition.
In the end, Japan proved to deliver more variety of plays, as setter and captain Mika Shibata powered the offense in such masterful way.
In the main event, Vietnam defeated Philippines 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 31-29) in front of the roaring home crowd at the PhilSports Arena.
Vietnam captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy carried the team with 20 points, while Pham Thi Nguyet Anh and Tran Thi Bich Thuy delivered 10 points each.
The host team sparked the excitement of the crowd as they forced to extend the third set. However, Vietnam outplayed the Philippines to edge them out in straight sets.
The preliminary round continues to unfold on Monday, August 22, before teams break for rest and recovery on Friday, August 26. Quarterfinals follow on Saturday, August 27
The final four teams play off on Sunday, August 28; with finals and awarding ceremony scheduled on Monday, August 29.
