Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, June 12, 2022 – Chinese Taipei, fielding more potential players, put it past fighting Uzbekistan in thrilling four-setter 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 25-15 in their 5th-8th playoffs clash in the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Championship at Nakhon Pathom Sports Center Gymnasium on Sunday.
Following the dramatic win, Chinese Taipei set up a rematch with Kazakhstan in the Monday’s 5th-6th place playoff, while Uzbekistan face off with old foes Iran to vie for 7th position.
Chinese Taipei had three double-digit performances from Chen Ssu-ye, Lee Ssu-yi and Lin Liang-tai, who respectively tallied 20, 14, 11 points, while Dilnoza Boymirzaeva led Uzbekistan with 16 points.
Chinese Taipei came up in full strength against the Uzbeks to snatch the first set 25-19. However, Uzbekistan taught them victory never comes easily as they counter-attacked well to stay hot on the rivals’ heels in the second set.
Chinese Taipei played more carefully with consistency. Their great determination was handsomely rewarded after that when they continued good show with powerful attacks and effective blocks to seal the hard-fought set 25-23.
In the third set, both teams came out with almost the similar standard which saw the score levelled 15-15, but triple blocks by Dilnoza Boymirzaeva, Bahriniso Shavkatova and Ezozakhon Ismatova made a difference as they helped Uzbekistan advance 19-16. Chinese Taipei also responded well, but found the going got tough to go down 18-25.
Losing one set, Chinese Taipei started confidently in the fourth set, while Uzbekistan became more prone to unforced errors. Taking a commanding 21-14 lead, Chinese Taipei allowed Uzbekistan only one more point to wrap up the comfortable set 25-15 and match.
