CLASSIFICATION MATCHES HEAT UP COMPETITION IN AVC CHALLENGE CUP 

Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 21, 2023 – Day 4 of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women saw teams play out the Classification Round with Hong Kong China, Vietnam, Chinese Taipei, Philippines and hosts Indonesia charting victories against their respective opponents. 

Hong Kong, China opened Wednesday’s proceedings at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium by picking up their first win in the competition. They took the tie-break, 3-2 (25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 22-25, 15-12) against Mongolia during 9th – 11th Classification match. 

In Pool F, Vietnam eased into a 3-0 match (25-10, 25-9, 25-18) against Iran to claim their third win in as many matches. They dominated the match, scoring 46 attacks, 7 blocks and 5 service winners. 

Chinese Taipei, likewise, remain unbeaten after Wednesday’s 3-0 match (25-7, 25-16, 25-16) over Uzbekistan. Captain Chen Tzu-Ya (14 points)  and Chu Ya-Hui (10 points) led in scoring for the victory in Pool F.

Philippines survived a tough tie-break, winning 3-2 (25-22, 26-28, 11-25, 29-27, 18-16) against India in Pool E.  Captain Aiza Maizo-Pontillas tallied 27 points, scoring in key moments for the team’s second victory in the championship. 

Also in Pool E, Indonesia staged another straight-set win 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16) against Australia in front of the home crowd in Gresik City. Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi brought in 18 points, with Mediol Stiovanny Yoku contributing another 13 markers. 

Teams head to rest and recover on Thursday. The Classification matches on Friday will then define Final Four teams to contend the AVC Challenge Cup and direct qualification into the FIVB Challenger Cup. 

The AVC Challenge Cup, starting with the 2023 edition, will now allocate ranking points to all participating teams, as means to help empower and elevate the level of competition within the Confederation.
