During the Joint Meeting, Mr Jabbour and Mr Habib Mohammed Abdulla expressed their sincere gratitudes to AVC to give Bahrain the green light to host the 21st edition, welcoming more than 16 participating teams to strut their stuff in the topflight championship. As a potential country, Bahrain had great experiences in hosting several major tournaments and both of them were upbeat that the host nation will be successful in terms of staging the top-tier event.

The meeting also discussed different areas of activities including Referee and VIS Clinics to be conducted in the remaining two days ahead of the kickoff of the tournament on August 22.

After that, the two-party working group visited the Isa Sports City Hall, the main competition site for the eight-day championship, for inspection.

A total of 17 teams from across the continent will be out to prove their talents in the August 22-29 championship, vying for top honour and two berths for the 2023 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship.

Hong Kong China, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are in Pool A, while Pool B features Japan, Iran and India and Pool C consists of Korea, Qatar and Kuwait. Pool D comprises Thailand and UAE, with Iraq, Bangladesh and Australia in Pool E and China, Pakistan and Chinese Taipei in Pool F.

The previous edition in 2018 was held here in Riffa, with Iran, Korea and Thailand making a one-two-three finish. Iran went on their incredible run to rule the world in the 2019 Men’s U21 World Championship, also taking place here in Riffa.

The 2020 Asian Men’s U20 Championship was due to be held in Tehran, Iran but, due to grave concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, was finally cancelled. Iran and Korea, top two teams from the 2018 Asian meet, had been confirmed to compete in the 2021 U21 World Championship, but Korea withdrew and Thailand as bronze medallists in 2018, came in place. Following their required FIVB World Rankings, China and Bahrain were also eligible for the 2021 world meet, but China withdrew.

At the last year’s U21 World Championship in Bulgaria and Italy, three Asian teams made the cut which saw Iran finish 9th place, Thailand 12th and Bahrain 14th.
