DOMINICANS STRUGGLE TO BEAT HOSTS THAILAND IN CLOSE BATTLE

Bangkok, Thailand, June 5, 2019 – Dominican Republic claimed a hard-fought five-set 31-29, 13-25, 30-28, 20-25, 16-14 against hosts Thailand in their second third-week encounter of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.

Young talent Chatchu-On Moksri chipped in with 23 points for Thailand, with veteran Pleumjit Thinkaow making good company with 20 points. Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez scored a match-high 36 points including 33 kills from 62 attempts for the winning side.

Marcos Kwiek, head coach of the Dominican Republic: “Of course I am really happy for this victory. But overall, I am not satisfied with the way we played today. We committed too many mistakes in many key points. It is difficult to say who played better today, but it is always difficult to play Thailand at home. Now we want to think about tomorrow’s match against Bulgaria. I hope we will show our best.”

Prisilla Rivera, captain of Dominican Republic: “I am very happy about this victory. I also wanted to say congratulations to Thailand for playing extremely well. It is always a very tough match to play against Thailand. We now want to improve our game and try to focus on the next match against Bulgaria tomorrow.”

Danai Sriwacharamaytakul, head coach of Thailand: “I want to congratulate the Dominican Republic for the victory today. It was a very difficult match for us. We had to face strong blocks and powerful counter-attacks. I think my players tried their best but we could not overcome their height and aggressiveness.”

When asked about tomorrow’s match with Turkey, the Thailand coach added: “I have to admit that it will be a very tough match once again for us against Turkey tomorrow. They did a very good job in blocking today. I think they have improved a lot. We will try our best to play against them. We will focus on our serving and speed.”

Nootsara Tomkom, captain of Thailand: “Congratulations to the Dominican Republic team for their victory. It is one more time that they beat us. For today I think it was a good match and everyone in the team showed their best, but at the end of the set, they played much better than we did. That is the reason why we lost to them today.”
