DRAWING OF LOTS SETS OFF COUNTDOWN TO 2022 MEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Date and venue set for the launch of next year’s big event in Russia

The Drawing of Lots ceremony for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship has been confirmed to take place on 30 September 2021 at Moscow’s Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace, to determine the pool composition for the 24 participating teams.

The ceremony, which will also reveal in which cities each team will be competing, is expected to bring together honoured guests of the FIVB and the organisers, volleyball legends, famous athletes and celebrities from Russia and beyond.

Six cities – Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Ufa, Ekaterinburg and Moscow – will host the six four-team pools of the first round.

Only two teams have already secured their berths in next year’s top volleyball event: Russia as hosts and Poland as defending champions. Ten more spots will be allocated to the top teams not yet qualified of the continental championships, with the remaining 12 tickets going to non-qualified teams according to the FIVB rankings.

FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° said:

“We are very excited to be approaching the Drawing of Lots ceremony where the composition of the pools for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2022 will be determined. This is an incredibly important milestone in the preparations for this world-renowned event which Russia is set to host across 10 cities.

“We look forward to this great celebration of our sport during the Drawing of Lots ceremony and, of course, during the World Championship itself. Russia is well-known for its strong credentials in hosting incredible sporting events and is on track to deliver an amazing tournament.”

ANO Organizing Committee Volleyball 2022 General Director Roman Stanislavov said:

“The official Drawing of Lots ceremony is one of the key events of the World Championship. Participating teams will find out who their opponents are and which host cities they will play their group stage matches at. For the host cities, the pools will be revealed.

“All the host cities are preparing carefully to host the event. It is important for them to learn which teams are coming to their cities, so they can organise everything to welcome delegations and fans from all over the world.

“For the organisers, the Drawing of Lots is a significant sporting and cultural event. We are working on a bright and memorable show which will combine volleyball traditions, Russian cultural heritage and hospitality and will not leave the guests indifferent. The Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace is the right place to bring all our ideas to life. It is a new sports facility, which has already hosted global events and has been recognized as one of the best sports venues in Moscow. I’m sure that on 30 September we will witness an unforgettable and spectacular show.”

The 2022 Men’s World Championship will take place in Russia from August 26 to September 11. In addition to the six host cities of the first round, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Yaroslavl and Kazan will also play hosts to the competition, for a total of ten cities across the country.

The format of the tournament has two group stages followed by the Final Six which will include the medals matches and will take place in Moscow.
