FIVB UPDATE ON COVID-19 PROTOCOLS AT VNL 2021

Health and wellbeing of all participants remains the top priority

The FIVB can confirm that the bus driver who drove the German men’s national volleyball team from the hotel to the training venue and back has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2021 in Rimini, Italy. The positive test result was identified during a mandatory PCR test on May 24 evening, with the result received on May 25.

Immediately following the test result, the bus driver was removed from the bubble and placed in quarantine. The German team will be provided with a new bus driver who will undergo both PCR and antigen tests before being permitted to enter the bubble.

Meanwhile, based on further evidence provided by the German team and the guidance of medical experts, the FIVB, COVID-19 Task Force, local event organiser and local health authorities have jointly agreed to implement a special procedure for the German team.

As such, the German national team will be placed in a semi-quarantine and be allowed to continue their VNL preparations in isolation in a training court with its own sanitary facilities. The training and sanitary facilities, in addition to any equipment used, will be sanitised before and after use. Additional measures will also be taken to ensure that the German national team does not come into close contact with any other participant, and all meals will be served in rooms. All other scheduled activities of the German team have been suspended until further notice.

The entire German team delegation will then be subject to both antigen and PCR tests on May 27. Any further actions will adhere to the guidelines stipulated by local health authorities.

The FIVB remains in close contact with the COVID-19 Task Force, event organiser and local health authorities, and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Rigorous health and safety measures at the event continue to be followed to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants, which is the FIVB’s number one priority.
