Pasig City, Philippines, August 24, 2022 – Hosts Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam picked up victories against their respective opponents in preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women on Wednesday at the PhilSports Arena.
Vietnam completed their stint in Pool A after defeating Korea in straight sets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-16).
Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet rested his chief scorers and brought in some alternate players who delivered for Vietnam’s third win in the competition.
Outside hitter Nguyen Thi Uyen (13 points) and middle blocker Ly Thi Luyen (10 points) led in the victory with double-digit markers.
Later, Thailand picked up their second win after taking 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-16) against Chinese Taipei to complete their round of assignments in Pool B.
Chatchu-on Moksri delivered 16 points as the top scorer while Pimpichaya Kokram added another 11 points in the victory.
In Wednesday’s main event, home team Philippines played to a fired up crowd at the PhilSports Arena, as they dealt a 3-1 match (25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 25-14) against Iran.
Jessica Margarett Galanza (21 points), Diana Mae Carlos (14 points) and Michele Theresa Gumabao (13 points) comprised the power trio to carry the hosts to their first win in Pool A.
Three more matches are lined up for preliminary round on Thursday, August 25, while teams pause for rest and recovery on Friday, August 26.
Saturday’s quarterfinals (August 27), will determine the Final Four match-ups on Sunday, August 28.
By Monday, August 29, the new champions will be hailed in the finale and awarding of the 7th edition of the competition.
