INDIA SEAL FIRST-DAY WIN AFTER COMEBACK 3-1 AGAINST PHILIPPINES

Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, June 6, 2022 – India produced a magnificent come-from-behind 3-1 (14-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19) victory against Philippines for their first win at the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship at the Nakhon Pathom Sports Centre Gymnasium on Monday.

The Filipinas made a confident start in their opening encounter against India. Their more determination paid its dividends earlier when the in-form Philippines surged away to win the first set by wide margin 26-14.

Going down 0-1, India fought back hard in the second set and they were seemingly going through the motions, resisting the rival’s best efforts to take the thrilling set 25-21 in a tough contest.

After that, India, powered by hard-attacking Rajnandani Mitra, gained a stranglehold over the third set as they excelled in attack to grab the tough set win 25-23 and stretch it to 2-1.

Philippines staged a determined comeback in the fourth set but still found India’s overwhelming dominance too good at the final stretch to go down 19-25.

Shah Viral, India’s head coach, said, “I think we failed to bring our A-game in terms of service reception and struggled to pass the ball. The reason why my players were rather freezing in the first set was the lack of plays as they did not play for almost three years due to COVID-19 and all our plans stopped. Today, they get familiar with the court and the ice is broken. You will see a better performance in the upcoming matches from India”.

On Tuesday, India will take on Japan, while Philippines go up against Kazakhstan, which lost to Chinese Taipei earlier on Monday.
