Tehran, Iran, September 21 2019 – Hosts Iran underlined their supremacy over the SMM 20th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship after a pulsating 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) win against Australia in the action-packed final showdown at the 12,000-seater Azadi Sports Complex on Saturday.
Talented Amir Ghafour chipped in with 20 points for Iran including 19 attacks from 26 attempts, while Milad Ebadipour kept good company to add 13 markers, Samuel Walker led Australia with 10 points including 8 attacks.
Iran entered the final round with a bitter 1-3 loss to Australia in the pool play, while Australia stormed into the showdown with remarkable unbeaten record of seven consecutive wins.
Against Australia, Iran took the first two lop-sided sets 25-14, 25-17, thanks to their impenetrable defence and Amir Ghafour’s destructive attacks. The third set became a tight contest with both sides pouring everything they had to win the set. The on-going game was see-saw as leads changed hands for several times. Iran fared better, refraining from making hasty unforced mistakes, to capture the set 25-21, match and the championship.
