Bangkok, Thailand, September 7, 2020 – The 2020-21 Iran Volleyball Super League will start on Wednesday, Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation announced on its official website iranvolleyball.com on Sunday.
IRIVF Director of Competition and Events Shahram Azimi said a total of 15 teams will take part in the new season.
Matches will be held in two rounds of preliminary and playoffs. In the preliminary round, the competition will be played in a two-legged system, with the top eight teams qualifying for the playoffs round.
The Iranian Super League (ISL) is a professional volleyball league in Iran at the top of the Iranian Volleyball League system. It was founded in 1975 as the Pasargard Cup, but after the Iranian Revolution it was renamed to the First Division. In 1997, the league system was revamped and the Iranian Super League was established.
Paykan Tehran, which have captured the Asian Men’s Club Championship for 7 times including 6 in a row (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011), have won 12, the most titles in the new Super League.
Sarmayeh Bank Tehran have captured 3 consecutive titles in 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. Shahrdari Varamin claimed the top spot in the 2018-2019 season and went on to underline their supremacy over the 2019 Asian Men’s Club Championship in Taipei. The 2019-2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the 2020 Asian Men’s Club Championship also suffered the same situation, with the 2021 edition due to be held in Thailand from April 25 to May 2.
