JAPAN ENJOY REMARKABLE RUN WITH GREAT WIN AGAINST RUSSIA

Ankara, Turkey, May 29, 2019 – Japan continued their winning streak against Russia on the second day of action in FIVB Volleyball Nations League Pool 6 in the Turkish capital Ankara following their dramatic 3-1 (25-22 23-25 25-18 26-24) against the world No.5.

It was another great win for Japan after their stunning straight-set victory over Turkey, hosts and silver medallists at the previous edition, on Tuesday.

Japan captain Yuki Ishii: ‘I’m happy that we won the match against Russia. We made a good job in attack and defence.”

Japan coach Kumi Nakada: “I’m happy that we continue our winning streak.”

Russia coach Alexander Krasilnikov: “In the first two sets we looked for opportunities, got used to the style of the game of the opponent. After that, my players calmed down, the nervousness went away, and we began to play. Unfortunately, we rarely managed to play with such a top team on equal terms.”

Russia player Margarita Kurilo: “At first we were really worried. But then adrenaline and emotions appeared, and we were able to find our way into the game. I hope that this will continue and we will start playing not from the middle of the match, but from the very first serve in the next matches.”
