JAPANESE MINISTER AND TOKYO 2020 VICE PRESIDENT EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF VOLLEYBALL AT ARIAKE ARENA

A delegation from the Dominican Republic also met with the FIVB President

Japanese officials and a delegation from the Dominican Republic were recently welcomed by FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F° to the Ariake Arena where breath-taking Tokyo 2020 volleyball action has been underway since Saturday 24 July 2021.

In particular, Japan’s Minister for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Tamayo Marukawa, and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee Vice President Toshiaki Endo attended the women’s volleyball match between Japan and Brazil.

After witnessing a determined performance from the Japan women’s national volleyball team, who eventually lost to Brazil in three sets, Minister Marukawa and Mr Endo discussed the strength of Japanese volleyball with FIVB President Dr Ary S. Graça F°. In light of Minister Marukawa also being the Minister in charge of Women’s Empowerment and the Minister of State for Gender Equality, the ways in which volleyball is using its inherent gender balance to champion gender equality were also discussed.

In addition, the FIVB President praised the tireless efforts of the Japanese parties in organising a safe and secure Olympic Games, while pointing to how the sport has been able to shine and inspire millions after a very difficult year for so many.

Meanwhile, the FIVB President also had the honour of meeting with the Sports Minister of the Dominican Republic Francisco Camacho, IOC Member Luis Mejía Oviedo and the Dominican Republic Olympic Committee (COD) President Antonio Acosta. They were all able to enjoy a thrilling match between South Korea and the Dominican Republic where the Dominicans were narrowly defeated 15-12 in the fifth and final set.

They discussed the rapid rise of the Dominican Republic women’s national volleyball team who most recently finished in sixth place at the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2021. The FIVB President commended the development of the national team and provided his thoughts on how this success could best drive and elevate the level of volleyball at all levels in the country.
