KOREA CONQUER TOP OF POOL A WITH STRAIGHT-SETS WIN ON IRAN

Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, July 9, 2022 – Korea went for their third straight win with a 3-0 match (25-20, 25-14, 25-21) against Iran in Pool A of the Preliminary Round of the 21st Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship at NU Sports Centre on Saturday.

Korean middle blocker Kim Sebeen led all scorers, charting a total of 16 points from 14 attacks, 1 stuff block, and 1 service winner.

Mahsa Ghaderi Ardekani led the charge for Iran, scoring 10 points (8 attacks and 2 blocks).

Iran put in good work and preparation against their opponents, marking off their territory with aggressive block-defence. They knew their taller line-up would be their advantage against well-composed plays, and this paid off.

As Iran were lining up their blocks securely, their opponents had to devise ways to vary the speed, angle, and delivery of their attacks.

Korea’s Kim Sebeen worked hard toward this cause, sliding away to order to draw the attack from the middle.

Korea managed to stay ahead, but not without the challeges from a much taller team. To reinforce their situation, the Korean side played with powerful serves to disrupt the passing unit on the other end of the court. This likewise made them prepare more effectively for their counter-attacks. Kim Sein and Captain Park Suyeon played equally well in passing and in attacking.

While Iran to continued to impose their tall presence in block-defence, Korea tried to run their plays much faster, knowing they could outrun the blocks.

The Korean side did rightly so, but their errors later allowed for Iran’s scoring run. They regrouped to take momentum toward their third win the competition.

“It was so difficult to be in this Pool, and we are just so happy to win today,” said Korea captain Park Suyeon.

Korea complete the Premilinary Round, sweeping all their matches to stay on top of Pool A, which qualifies them for the 1st-4th semi-finals bracket. Iran take the third spot in the pool, which will place them within the 5th-8th bracket.

Teams now await their respective match-ups for Sunday, July 10.
