Superstar Kim Yeon-Koung bagged 14 points on Korea’s losing efforts as Dominican Republic battled hard to see off the determined opponents in closely-contested straight sets in their second Week 2 encounter of the 2021 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy on Tuesday.
Going down 23-25, 26-28 in the first two sets, Korea put their acts together with high hopes of making amends. However, the Dominicans continued their remarkable run in this match to foil the rivals’ challenge. Dominican Republic took the third set 25-18 and match.
Paola Pena Isabel Yonkaira and Elizabeth Martinez Brayelin proved dominant forces for Dominican Republic to be reckoned with as both of them chipped in with identical 16 points, while Ceneida Gonzalez Lopez Gaila added 15. Kim Yeon-Koung led Korea with 14 points including 13 attacks.
Korea’s Yeum Hye Seon said: “Since the beginning of this week we have opponents who are blocking high, so it’s difficult, but we have been practicing how to use this high-block, so we hope that in the last match we will use what we have worked on. Their attack was very strong, but we are not embarrassed. We are focusing on what we have to do tomorrow.”
Niverka Marte of Dominican Republic said: “I’m just really happy, because we finally could show our best. We really needed this attitude and really needed to win today, so we are really happy that we won this time. It was very important, especially for recovery after yesterday.
“Korea are a strong team. They play really fast, they have Kim Yeon Koung who is an amazing player. Yesterday we talked about our attitude, we played quiet and in general we are happy people, but we couldn’t show it on court before and today we did and it was key. We thought ‘okay we will be happy, we will smile, scream and play our game with a flow’.”
