LAIRD/PALMER DOMINANT ON MANLY BEACH

Canberra, Australia, March 2, 2020 – Nikki Laird and Becchara Palmer were forced to fight all the way before winning gold in the Australian Open Beach Volleyball Championship at Manly Beach on Sunday.

Laird and Palmer, who won the FIVB Event at Manly Beach in 2019, returned to defeat fellow Australians Michaela Mokrohajska and Lucia Michalovicova 2-0, (23-21, 21-12) in the final of the Australian Open.

The bronze medal was taken out by Stefanie Weller and Britt Kendall.
In the men’s, Paul Burnett and Marcus Ferguson won gold 2-0 in a forfeit with Zach Schubert and Max Guehrer, who were unable to take to the court because of injury, Schubert suffering an abdominal strain in the semi finals.
French pair Samuel Cattet and Olivier Barthelemy won bronze.

Volleyball Australia CEO Andrew Dee said it was a great event “ To have reconstructed the beach courts which were washed away, and to see so many players participating through the tournament was fantastic, it was inspiring”.
