After an intensive training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, the Australian men’s volleyball team has departed for Japan, where they will play in the 21st Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship.

At the last Asian Championship in 2019, the team played in the gold medal match against Iran, unfortunately going down three sets to nil.

Having defeated Iran at the recent 2021 Volleyball Nations League, the Volleyroos head into the Championship with some added confidence.

It all kicks off on Sunday, September 12, with Australia set to face Uzbekistan in the first match, with their remaining pool matches to be played against Kuwait and China.

With qualification for the 2022 World Championship on the line, Volleyroos captain Nehemiah Mote said that the team all share the same goal of what they want to achieve in Japan.

“The goal is crystal clear for us and has been the basis for our approach and mindset during this short but vital preparation bubble in Canberra – go one better than last time,” Mote said.

“The importance of this tournament is understood, the demands of the camp met, the guidance and support from our staff gratified.

“Now it’s about putting together a performance worthy of a World Championship berth in 2022,” he said.

Head Coach Marcos Miranda echoed Mote’s comments, adding that he is confident in his teams ability after a gruelling training camp in Canberra.

“The Asian Senior Men’s Championship brings together big teams like China, Korea, Qatar, Iran and Japan,” Miranda said

“The competition promises to be very challenging and exciting.

“Australia arrives with a reinforced team, bringing back some experienced players such as Tom Edgar, Curtis Stockton and Max Staples.

“The team has been preparing at a camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra in the lead up to this tournament, and we will arrive motivated to strive for the best result at this years Asian Championship,” he said.
