Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, June 24, 2023 – Mongolia enjoyed the moments of their 3-0 win (25-9, 25-11, 25-14) against Macau, China in the 9th-11th Playoffs of the 2023 AVC Challenge Cup for Women at the Tri Dharma Petrokimia Gresik Gymnasium on Saturday morning.
Gantogtokh Khandsuren bested all scorers in the field with 12 points, but also elicited the support of the entire unit on the floor who imposed pressure in serve and block.
Macau, China seemed unable to manage the pressure, trying to recover plays, or completely losing points in the process. They gave away a total of 23 points based on their error count. Hitter Leong Chi Ioi proved that could be relied upon by the flank, but there needed to be a cohesive system for the entire unit on the floor
Mongolia head coach Narachata Taweewitchakariya commented “The Macau team seem so young and maybe very limited experience. Our team also has limited exposure, maybe around 2 international matches only in a year.”
All the same, he was delighted with the team’s first win in the competition, given their training background.
“We were only able to train for 10 days, and I knew nothing about the players or their previous experience or how they move or play. I am very happy that we got this result today,” he added.
Narachata further commented on the revamped format of the AVC Challenge Cup in allocating ranking points to participating teams.
“It’s a good opportunity for young teams or those with limited exposure or experience to appreciate why it is important to just keep playing. This is an important win for Mongolia team, and I hope we can continue to improve,” he commented.
Mongolia completed their bid in the competition, and will now await the result of Sunday’s match between Macau, China and Hong Kong, China (09:00 Indonesia time) in order to determine the final 9th-11th ranking.
