Can Tho, Vietnam, April 23, 2019 – Japanese Megumi Murakami and Miki Ishii captured the top spot at the 2019 AVC Women’s Beach Volleyball Tour Vietnam Can Tho Open following a hard-fought win over Thailand’s Varapatsorn Radarong and Khanittha Hongpak in the final showdown on Monday.
The Japanese duo recently picked up silver medal after going down to reigning champions Wang Fan and Xia Xinyi from China in the final clash at the double-gender AVC Beach Volleyball Tour “20th Samila Open” in Songkhla, Thailand, a final rematch of the 2018 Asian Game beach volleyball competition in Indonesia.
Murakami and Ishii performed brilliantly in their semi-final clash earlier against New Zealand’s Polley Shaunna Marie and Tilley Julia to send the Kiwis duo packing 2-0 (21-12 21-14), but struggled to beat Varapatsorn and Khanittha 2-0 (22-20,29-27) in the 49-minute final encounter on Monday.
In the third-place playoff, Thailand’s Tanarattha Udomchavee and Rumpaipruet Numwong, who recovered from their disappointing loss to Varapatsorn and Khanittha 2-0 (21-13,21-0) in an all-Thai semi-final clash, revived their fortunes to power past New Zealand ‘s Polley and Tilley 2-0 (21-16, 21-17) in 39 minutes to take home bronze medal.
